Building History

The Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul established the third hospital in Los Angeles in the early 1860s. This was the first new building that the hospital had occupied, a two-story brick structure, located on Naud Street, between North Main Street and San Fernando Road. The sisters incorporated the institution officially on 06/21/1869 as the "Los Angeles Infirmary." This building was in use by the order from c. 1862 until 1884.

A photograph, Item #CHS-19183, indicated on the back of it: "'Sept. 1, 1884, corner stone of new hospital was laid. 1886 old hospital moved to new place. 1904 entrance changed and some remodeling done. 1929 hospital moved to Third and Lake. 1933 in summer, building is torn down.' -- Charles Puck."
