According to architectural biographer, Henry F. Withey, this building was constructed "of reinforced concrete, utilizing salvaged street railway cables for reinforcing the walls and foundations" (p. 190); Withey's note was taken directly from the obituary published in the Architect and Engineer, 03/1941, p. 68; the obituary also credited Blanchard Hall as the first reinforced concrete building in Southern California; it dated c. 1898.
