Beaux-Arts trained New York architect John Russell Pope (1874-1937) produced the Classical design for the Mausoleum of Henry Huntington (1850-1927) and his wife, Arabella Duval Huntington (1850-1924). It was round in form, following the precedents set at the well-known Temple of Vesta at Tivoli, Italy (1st century BCE) or Bramante's more grand Tempietto at San Pietro in Montorio, Rome, Italy (1508). Pope utilized circles and spheres in his design, so that the mausoleum would remain serene in its setting no matter how it was viewed.
