Sanatariums had a long history in Pasadena, the first ones constructed in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. With the connection of transcontinental rail service to Los Angeles from San Francisco via the Central Pacific in 1876, ailing Easterners could recover their health in Pasadena's warm, dry climate, sunshine and, at the time, clean air. (The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad constructed a southern transcontinental route by 1885.) Tuberculosis was a scourge at this time, and sanatariums developed across Southern CA, many located in Pasadena. The Hanna-Rich Sanatarium was in operation c. 1947.
