The Moran Brothers, Robert, Peter and William, born in New York, established their first machine shop on Yesler's Wharf in 1882, using a savings of $1,500. Machine shops were especially important for ambitious young cities like Seattle to have, along with the skilled machinists to use them; with machine shops, other types of manufacturing enterprises could be built. The business grew and moved to larger accommodations on Western Avenue before the Great Fire of 06/06/1889. The fire swept away much of the Pioneer Square Business District, including the Moran Brothers shop, valued at a sizable $40,000. Ten days after the fire, 06/16/1889, the Morans had built this temporary facility on Charles Street amidst the city's charred remains.
