During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the City of Salem Recorder's Office at 236 Liberty Street also housed a number of other administrative offices of the city government. It operated as a de facto city hall. It is unclear if this building was located at 236 Liberty Street SE or 236 Liberty Street NE.
