In Polk's Seattle City Directory of 1890, a listing for the Bryant Lumber Company did not appear, but a listing for John H. Bryant, Vice-President of the Seattle, Lakeshore and Eastern Railway, was included. It noted that he was a resident of New York, NY. The Bryant Lumber and Shingle Mill Company did appear in the 1901 Polk's. As it lay next to the Seattle, Lakeshore and Eastern tracks in Fremont, it seems probable that John Bryant had some connection to this mill.
This mill occupied the southeast corner of Fremont Avenue North and North 34th Street until the early years of the 20th century. The Hotel Shorey, a lodging place for some mill workers, stood directly across North 34th Street. The mill's location could be seen from a distance because of its towering, obelisk-shaped furnace.
