Los Angeles architect Milton M. Friedman designed this five-floor apartment block, organized, like many of the era, in a U-shape around a central courtyard. Its basic detailing derived from Renaissance and Baroque Italian palazzos; Friedman included such Baroque details as the broken pediment located over the main entryway, the first story's channel-jointed coursed ashlar and the quoins. This conglomeration of elements was typical of Beaux-Arts architecture of the 1890s-1920s.
While the first floor had an ashlar masonry cladding, the upper four stories were covered in less-expensive brick. Rudimentary ornamental details along the parapet suggested a need for economy. The two main wings of the front side displayed the elaborate metal fire escapes typical of the era.
