The ex-boxer Phil "Babe" Brandelli (1918-1978, who held a 20-26-4 career record) opened the venerable Brig, a bar that became a Venice fixture, in 1948. The Brandelli Family sold the establishment in 1997 to David Paris who initiated the 2001 renovation.

In 2001, Alice Kimm and John Friedman renovated the Brig, making it for a time, the hippest place in Venice. Credits for the remodel were given as follows: "John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects Inc., Los Angeles: John Friedman, principal in charge of design; Alice Kimm, principal; John Martin, project designer; Joel Chichowski and Dan Brunn, designers."
