Building History
In 2022, the University of Washington Book Store approached the retail book store chain, Barnes and Noble, to enter into an agreement whereby the New York-based book retailer would take over the marketing of trade books in its space. An article by Eric Olson in the Seattle Times stated that a deal had been finalized by 05/2025: "The setup will be somewhat unique: The bookselling giant, resurgent in recent years under fifth-year CEO James Daunt, will run operations under the name and umbrella of the University Book Store but retain profits derived from the trade books department. Barnes & Noble will pay rent on the space and also give a percentageof booksales back to the University Book Store. The apparel and textbooks department, as well as Boon Boona Coffee, will remain unchanged under the leadershipof the existing University Book Store management team." (See Eric Olson, "University Book Store gets a new operator--Barnes & Noble," Seattle Times, 05/24/2025, p. A9.)
