The building was named for Marion R. Gray, who operated a company that produced neckwear, suspenders, hosiery, handkerchiefs, waistcoats, belts, bathrobes, house coats, garters and arm-bands. In 1917, the firm had its headquarters in the Grayco Building, 732-736 South Los Angeles Street, Los Angeles, CA.
In 09/1958, the following commercial enterprises rented space in the Gray Building: W.A. Genesy & Company (infants & children's wear); A. Olodort Company (trousers and sportswear); Syd Jackman (mannequins, display equipment); Jack Smith and Company (manufacturers, distributors); the Boston Shoe Company (footwear).
