The congregation received official "mission" status in 1876 from its Catalonian-born Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany y Conill (1814-1888); a building fund raised $2,800 initially to purchase four parcels of land on Church Street in San Francisco, CA. Father Lawrence Breslin held early services in an unused hospital building, but sufficient funds had been gathered by 1880 to start construction. By 1880, the congregation had been renamed a parish and numbered approximately 200 families. Archbishop Alemany participated in laying the cornerstone on 04/29/1880. This church could seat 750 and cost its parishioners $18,000 to build. The additional lots controlled by the church would be used for a new, larger and more grand second church, begun in 1897 and completed in 1911.
