Maud M. Marlatt (1889-1975) and her husband, John W. Marlatt (1882-1967), operated a well-known bakery at this address in the 1920s-1930s. This was second location of Mrs. Marlatt's Home Bakery, (the first was a smaller store elsewhere in the University District), which had grown to three Seattle locations by 1928: 4321 University Way NE, Ravenna Boulevard and Brooklyn Street and 6519 10th Avenue NE. On 11/22/1930, the Marlatts had six stores, and signed a merchandising agreement with the Manning's Incorporated, coffee shop chain, whereby Manning's 12 Seattle locations would serve and sell their baked goods. Operations during the Depression were likely to have been difficult; moreover, there may have been other reasons leading to a 1935 dissolution of the partnership, perhaps related to quality control. An announcement in the Seattle Times stated in 1935: "Mrs. J.W. Marlatt, who for the past five years has been associated with Mannings, Inc., announces the severance of all connections with Mannings, Inc. Hereafter bakery goods baked by and under the supervision of Mrs. Marlatt will be sold only in her one store at her old location in the University District, 4321 University Way, next door to Woolworth's." (See "Important Announcement!" [advertisement], Seattle Times, 07/15/1935, p. 6.)
