Overview
This was the first Seattle store of the San Francisco-based piano and sheet music seller, Sherman, Clay and Company. It opened in the flush economic years following the Yukon Gold Rush. As this distigushed retail chain of piano stores disintegrated in the 2010s, the Seattle outlet was the last to remain open, closing in 08/2013.
Building History
On 01/01/1900, the San Francisco-based Steinway and Sons piano retailer, Sherman, Clay and Company, operated its Seattle showroom at 514 2nd Avenue in Seattle, WA. It was either located in or across from the Seattle Hotel. In 1891, the new Seattle Hotel operated in what was still known as the Occidental Block.
