The Paradise Beer Garden occupied one-third of the block enclosed by South Main, South Spring, West 3rd, and West 4th Streets;

A German immigrant, George Lehman, established the Los Angeles's first beer garden, a spot that became, during the day, a central cultural spot for the local German-American community as well as a rough-and tumble bar for frontiersmen after dark;
