Building History

Businessmen Louis Schwabacher (1837-1900) emigrated from Zimdorf, Bavaria, c. 1850, part of the flood of Germans that left after liberal rebellions failed in Prussia, the Rhineland and Bavaria in 1848. Louis came to the US and moved about the country, living for a time in MS, and then settling in San Francisco, CA, in 1858. Shortly after establishing himself there, he sent for his brothers Abraham Schwabacher (c. 1838-1909), and Sigmund Schwabacher (1841-1917). They established a general store in Walla Walla, WA, and then opened their first outlet in Seattle, WA, on 10/11/1869. Between 1869-1892, the brothers and their brother-in-law, Bailey Gatzert (1829-1893), operated it.

Architect Emil de Neuf (1863-1915) designed this building for the Schwabacher Brothers. The previous store burned in a large fire on 06/27/1892.
