Prominent businessman and civic booster Judge Thomas Burke (1849-1925) and his wife, Caroline, used this rustic dwelling as their summer residence on the western bank of Lake Washington. Its interior was cabin-like, with a prominent ashlar fireplace, unpeeled logs and twigs used for supports, and rough boards for wall surfaces. The Burkes chose Adirondack-type chairs and used polar bear pelts for carpeting, and collected many Native American baskets. They maintained their main house on Boylston Avenue in Seattle's Capitol Hill Neighborhood.

Norwegian-born photographer Anders Beer Wilse (1865-1949) photographed the residence, between 1897-1900.
