New Hampshire-born rancher William C.B. Richardson (1815-1908) bought 671 acres of land along the Los Angeles River in 1868, naming it the "Santa Eulalia Ranch." In order to spur beneficial development, Richardson donated land to various organizations including the Southern Pacific Railroad Company (to create a stop nearby to his ranch), a tile factory, the local school district, and the Tropico Presbyterian Church.
