The de Young Family, owners of the long-lucrative San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, controlled KRON from its inception on 11/15/1949 until its sale in 1999 to Young Broadcasting. It operated as an affiliate of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) until 12/31/2001, when it became an independent station along the lines of KCAL in Los Angeles, CA, once owned by Young. KRON moved into this facility in 1967.

This second studio for KRON-TV stood on ground once occupied by the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Mary, which burned in 1962.
