Building History

Located on Port Townsend Bay, the Puget Sound Iron Company first produced iron at this plant in 02/1881. It's blast furnace utilized low-grade iron ore from the region, and was sold to the Pacific Steel Company by 1902.

Building Notes

Workers struck at the Pacific Steel Company in 1914, ending their walkout on 02/01/1914. (See "Seattle and State Advance During Year 1914," Seattle Times, 01/03/1915, p. 24.)

Alteration

The plant was reconstructed by the Pacific Steel Company during 1917-1918 to produce steel during World War I. In 1922, the Bulletin (#27) put out by the State of Washington, Division of Geology, summarized this period: "For a total period of eight months during the years of 1917 and 1918, the Pacific COast Steel Company operated a reconstructed plant at Irondale [WA], using left over ore from China, mill cinders, some ore from Texada [Island, BC, Canada], and some bog ore from British Columbia." (See "History of the Iron Industry in Washington," in State of Washington, Division of Geology, Bulletin #27,Accessed 07/10/2012.)
