Building History

The Asbury Apartments reflected a trend in Los Angeles apartment design for luxurious, costly and well-crafted buildings by the mid-1920s. An article entitled, "Higher Quality in Flats Shown," appeared in the Los Angeles Times in late 1926 and said of the Asbury: "The Asbury Apartments, located on Sixth and Carondelet streets at a cost of $1,250,000 this year, again emphasizes the high quality of work that is going into local apartment house projects. This structure occupies a pretentious site that overlooks Westlake Park and from the point of inside furnishings and appointments ranks with the ultra-exclusive. It contains eighty-five apartment homes and was constructed by the Winter Construction Company." (See "Higher Quality in Flats Shown," Los Angeles Times, 11/14/1926, sect. E., p. 1.)
