USC's fifth President (1921-1947), Dr. Rufus Bernhard von KleinSmid (1875-1964), who began his career as a Professor of Education and Psychology at De Pauw University, assembled and donated a large collection of materials pertaining to world affairs to the university's library. This collection became rehoused in the Von KleinSmid Center in 1966, in a building designed by New York architect Edward Durrell Stone (1902-1978). According to the center's web site, the library cost $3,260,000 to erect.
