This factory maintained by the publisher and aviation pioneer, Frederick Marriott (c. 1805-1884), produced dirigibles capable of short flights. One, the steam-powered Avitor Hermes, Jr., flew briefly in 1869 and was projected to be the prototype of a dirigible that would carry passengers between the East and West Coasts before the transcontinental railroad's completion that year. Marriott partnered with San Francisco cable car magnate Andrew Smith Hallidie (1836-1900) on this aborted venture.
