In 1878, the San Francisco News Letter and California Advertiser, founded in 1856 by Frederick Marriott (c. 1905-1884), operated its main office at Merchant Street and Montgomery Street in San Francisco, CA. At this time, the News Letter had the first telephone in the city; it linked Marriott's own house at Jones Street and Lombard Street with the office. Marriott was an early enthusiast for the concept of aviation, whose Avitor Hermes, Jr., became the first craft (in 1869) to fly under its own power in the US. He maintained a manufacturing facility, the Avitor Works, near Millbrae, CA.
