Newspaper magnate Randolph Hearst purchased this existing residence for $400,000 on Black Mountain near Cambria, CA, in 1978. He furnished the four-story residence with valuable antiques. When he purchased it, the dwelling had a large stone fireplace and a wine cellar.
Demolished; it burned on 02/24/1987. No water was available at the house site, so when the tanks of the fire engines were exhausted, nothing more could douse the flames. (See "Fire destroys Randolph Hearst's home," Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 02/26/1987, p. A16.)
