Inyo County was formed on 03/22/1866. Between this date and 06/1868, the county rented space for offices. In 06/1868, J.J. Mankin received a $9,832 county contract to erect a two-story brick courthouse. Finished a year later, the building had been in use for about three years when it was destroyed by the 7.4-magnitude Lone Pine Earthquake, epicentered in the Owens Vallley on 03/26/1872. Its force was comparable to that of the Great Earthquake of 04/18/1906 in San Francisco, CA.
