Financier Alexander Montgomery (1825-1893) provided nearly $500,000 to the San Francisco Theological Seminary, allowing it to build its new San Anselmo Campus in 1891-1892. Montgomery's money helped to pay for Montgomery Hall, Scott Hall, faculty housing on campus and a mausoleum for himself.
Like neighboring Scott Hall (which once featured the seminary's library), Montgomery Hall underwent a thorough renovation to repair damage sustained in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. This work was completed c. 2000, and supervised by Architectural Resources Group, Architects, Planners and Conservators, Incorporated. It worked with the following: Landscaping: Studio Green, Mill Valley, CA; Structural Engineer: Degenkolb, San Francisco, CA; Mechanical Engineer: William Mah Mechanical Engineers, San Francisco, CA; Electrical Engineer: Pete O. Lapid and Associates, San Francisco, CA; Acoustical Engineer: Shen, Milsom Wilke/Paoletti, San Francisco, CA; Contractor: Plant Construction; Project Management: Hixson and Associates, Mill Valley, CA; Cost Estimator: PH Waszink Construction Consultant, Sausalito, CA. The California Preservation Foundation gave the renovation a Preservation Design Award.
