Avalon Ballroom

Venue used by Chet Helms, a well-known 1960s San Francisco promoter and one-time partner of Bill Graham, for rock concerts; Helms was the leader of the San Francisco hippie commune/music promoters, The Family Dog; he paid $800 a month for the Avalon, from April 1966 until Novemeber 1968, when the City of San Francisco refused to grant sound permits to him; the Avalon and Graham's Fillmore Auditorium were the two main sites for top acts in San Francisco's fertile late 1960s rock music scene; the auditorium was then-leased by Soundproof Productions, another promoter, and held shows there until c. 1970;

Avalon Ballroom renovated and re-opened by "hippie entrepreneur" Steve Shirley (aka Morning Spring Rain) in January 2003;
