William Ross Rust and his wife, Helen, lived in this residence from at least 1915-1920. Rust, President of the Tacoma Smelter and Refining Company, built another notable house in the area, a Colonial Revival Style dwelling at 1001 North I Street in Tacoma, WA.

This Renaissance Revival residence at 521 North Yakima Avenue was a constituent of the National Register's Stadium-Seminary National Historic District.
