Overview
This five-story building served as the home of the San Jose Young Men's Christian Association between 1913 and 1959.
Building History
The San Jose branch of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was founded in 1867.
A note in the American Architect from 08/1911 stated: "Y.M.C.A. building will be erected on Third and Santa Clara Sts." (See "Building News: California," American Architect, vol. C, no. 1859, 08/09/1911, p. 7.)
The boosterish Secretary of the San Jose Chamber of Commerce, Joseph T. Brooks, wrote in an introductory essay, "A Review of San Jose and Santa Clara County," in the Polk-Husted Directory Company's San Jose City and Santa Clara County Directory 1911-1912: "Recently (June, 1911), the citizens, in ten days, raised a fund of $147,000 for a Young Men's Christian Association Building; the site has been selected and the property is in possession of the Association." (See Joseph T. Brooks, "A Review of San Jose and Santa Clara County," in the Polk-Husted Directory Company's San Jose City and Santa Clara County Directory 1911-1912, [Oakland, CA: Polk-Husted Directory Company, 1911], p. 8.)
The architect William Binder (1871-1953) designed the building inspired by Italian Renaissance palazzi.
The YMCA was later renovated to become the Hotel Clariana, that opened on 06/07/2017.
Alteration
The Hotel Clariana was renovated between 2015 and 2017. When the hotel opened, it was repainted a shade of aquamarine.
