The Southern Pacific Portable Jail rode the rails between Bakersfield, CA, and Caliente, CA, beginning in the 1870s. The crude wooden car carried prisoners along the Southern Pacific line to the previous Kern County Courthouse in Havilah, CA. The Havilah Courthouse operated until 1884, when the seat was transferred to the growing town of Bakersfield. In 2011, it occupied land at 3801 Chester Avenue, Bakersfield.
