This shoe-shaped building originally housed Deschwanden's Shoe Repair Store, which opened in 1947. It followed in the mimetic tradition of roadside architecture, exaggerated, fanciful buildings resembling objects or animals erected to attract the attention of passing motorists. Mimetic buildings were often shaped to communicate the kinds of goods sold by the shop's purveyor. Mimetic buildings had a humorous, surreal appeal, becoming beloved landmarks often preserved by successive generations.
This white, plaster on lath shoe building, complete with laces, measured 20-feet high and 30-feet long.
