The original Mexican land grant for the Tejon Ranch dated to 1843, Subsequent to this, US Army General Edward Fitzgerald Beale obtained the property and began its expansion. Truxton Beale continued the acquisition process until holdings reached 422 square miles, about the size of Los Angeles County. Tejon Ranch was a publicly traded company (its symbol being "TRC"); in 2008, it reached agreement with five environmental organizations-- California’s Planning and Conservation League, Audubon California, the Endangered Habitats League, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Sierra Club--to set aside 240,000 acres for permanent conservation, if the groups would not contest its construction of three projects on the remaining 30,000 acres: the Tejon Ranch Commerce Center, a commercial/industrial center at US Interstate 5 and CA Highway 99 covering 1,450-acres; Centennial, "a new town that is designed to served as a model of sustainable development for 21st century California;" and Tejon Mountain Village, a resort development. This huge agricultural property, assembled by Edward Fitzgerald Beale and his son Truxton, remained, in 2012, one of the largest farms in the State of CA, comprising 270,000 acres on which almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and grapes are raised, along with over 10,000 head of cattle.
