Building History

Alphonzo Bell (1875-1947), the highly ethical real estate developer of Bel-Air Estates and portions of the Westwood and the Pacific Palisades (among other tracts in Los Angeles), erected this-room 42 residence for himself and his wife, Minnewa, and their family. The house occupied a hilltop site, 1,760 acres large, with sweeping views of West Los Angeles and the ocean.

Bell built an extensive complex at Capo Di Monte including elaborately terraced grounds and a riding stable. Portions of these outbuildings became incorporated into the later Bel-Air Hotel.

Demolished; only portions of retaining walls and terraces on the hilly site remained in 2011.
