The original 20-acre property purchased by Josiah and Emmeline Doulton was known as "Ocean View Farm." Josiah Doulton, an heir to the English Royal Doulton ceramics company (formed in 1815), erected this residence for his family. The Doultons, in 1889, built a separate cottage for visitors which eventually began to be rented to tourists. Over the years, the Doultons added many shingled and clapboard-sided buildings to the property which came to be called "Miramar Inn." By 1910, 29 lodging structures dotted the oceanfront property. The Doultons owned the inn until 1939 when it was sold to Paul Gawzner on 11/03/1939. For years, the collection of cottages and larger hotel buildings was unified by its blue roofs. Gawzner maintained the Miramar Inn until 1998, when it was sold to a succession of owners. (See "Miramar by the Sea,"
