Building History

English-bron architect Gordon Bernie Kaufmann (1888-1949) designed Grace Scripps Clark Hall, completed in the autumn of 1928.

As noted on a website of Scripps College: "It is the joint gift of Grace Scripps Clark and Ellen Browning Scripps, in memory of James E. Scripps, founder and editor of the Detroit Evening News and father and brother of the donors. The building features a high-ceilinged baronial dining room, inner courtyards, and balconies, and the mosaic-paved Olive Court, which externally joins Clark Hall to Toll Hall." (See Scripps College.edu, "Scripps Timeline: 1928," accessed 03/04/2024.)

Alteration

A fireplace was added to an entry room to create a reading space in the early 1930s. The Clark Hall Dance Studio and Swimming Pool was added in 1932-1933. A north wing to the Clark Hall dormitory, added in 1936, accommodated 8 new student rooms, making a total of 56; a loggia connecting the portions of the dorm was also erected at this time. The Guide to the Scripps College Campus noted a number of recent alterations to Clark Hall: "Recent renovations have significantly changed the interior rooms of Grace Scripps Clark Hall, converting the two-story baronial dining hall into a living room and changing the former living room and French rooms into residential spaces. The antique furniture has been moved to other more secure locations. The Olive Court continues to be a popular gathering place, with its arcades opening to a raised fountain and terrazzo pavement. The small gardens west of Grace Scripps, which form a series of linked enclosures, have been planted with flowers. The northern part of the dormitory has been expanded over the years, and the 1936 loggia now forms part of an enclosed courtyard with grass and cypress trees. Between Grace Scripps and Toll Halls were delivery docks and parking areas for the old kitchen; with recent renovations in 2000-2001, this area has been landscaped for outdoor entertaining."
