Joseph Santilli, an immigrant from Abruzzi, Italy, who came to the US at age 17, operated two short-lived restaurants before opening his Italian Village eatery in the old Fifth Avenue Cafe in the 1930s. The Italian Village operated at 1413 5th Avenue from the 1930s-09/1971. He was forced to vacate the location by 09/27/1971.
Santilli undertook a $70,000 remodeling of the Italian Village c. 1961, to include a night club space with the family restaurant.
