This rail station serving the town of Sumner (annexed by the City of Bakersfield in 1910) opened on 06/27/1889. Originally, the Richardsonian Romanesque station had a long arched arcade that connected the passenger depot with a hotel. Passenger service ceased here in 1971, after all lines were nationalized by Amtrak.
The station was updated in the 1930s, giving it a more simplified appearance. The hotel was subsequently transformed into office space for the Southern Pacific Railroad and its successor (after 1996) the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroads at one point enclosed some of the passenger arcades to obtain added space.
