Local voters, in 1913, passed a school bond issue to raise $20,000 to erect a modern, two-story school. The new school opened in 1914.
The Associated Oil Company drilled for oil in the Elk Hills area west of Bakersfield, hitting a massive reservoir in 06/1911. Subsequent exploration by the Standard Oil Company and others made the Elk Hills Fields one of the most important finds then known in the US. Expansion of the oil industry near Bakersfield led to a rapid rise in population during the 1910s-1920s, and concurrent need for enhanced school facilities. Another bond issue in 1927 passed to raise $120,000 for the construction of a new auditorium and cafeteria at the school. A new school building containing a classroom, cafeteria and music room was added in 1937, as was a separate 9-room elementary school.
