A short article in the 04/1922 issue of the Western Canner and Packer stated: "At Merced, Cal., during the second week of April work was started on the new warehouse and packing plant of the Merced Growers' Packing Association on the Southern Pacific reservation at Sixteenth Street. About sixteen years ago growers in this district began raising early Mexican tomatoes and the industry has developed until there are more than 125 growers at present. They have now developed a high grade of early tomatoes and two years ago formed an association to market their products with uniform grade under the registered trade mark 'Pride of Merced Tomoatoes.' According to plans of the association a small plant will be built to make tomato paste from the culls and to can the balance of the crop after the shipping season is past." (See "Merced Growers Packing Association to Can Tomatoes," Westerm Canner and Packer, v. 13, 04/1922, p. 44, online atAccessed 09/21/2011.)

This Merced Growers' Packing Association facility was served by a spur line of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1922, the plant was located nearby to a Union Oil facility.
