This large mine, one of the largest employers in the Kennett, CA, area, closed due to falling copper prices following World War I. The closure of the Mammoth Mine proved disastrous for the City of Kennett, which was forced to disincorporate in 1931 due to a dearth of inhabitants. By 1945, the reservoir of Shasta Dam (Lake Shasta), flooded the site of Kennett, burying it under 400 feet of water.
