Overview

This firm operated as a private company from 1906-1921 and as cooperative of sugar growers from 1921-1993. The company was set up by Hawaiian sugar cane interests who wished to challenge Claus Spreckels's beet sugar monopoly in CA.

Building History

Architecture writer Frederick Jennings stated in the Architect and Engineer of the California and Hawaii Sugar Refinery: "As the illustrations show, Mr. Crim has had considerable experience in the past few years in industrial work, one of his best examples being the California-Hawaiian Sugar Refinery at Crockett. This plant was built with a view to permanency and absolute protection against fire, and it is without doubt one of the best built refineries on the Pacific Coast." (See Frederick Jennings, "Some Recent Work of William H. Crim, Jr.," Architect and Engineer, vol. LVI, no. 1, 01/1919. p 57.).
