Alister MacKenzie (1870-1934), a noted Scottish designer of golf courses, came to the US in about 1927. Ar this time, he worked on courses at the J.C. Melrose Country Club, Cheltenham, PA, and Meadow Club, Fairfax, CA. Immediately before designing the Pasatiempo course, MacKenzie, along with the champion golfer Marion Hollins, created the design for the vaunted Cypress Point Club, Pebble Beach, CA (1928). He also designed a number of notable designs in the Australia and the US subsequently, such as Royal Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia, Kingston Heath, Cheltenham, Australia, and the Augusta National, Augusta, GA (1933) for golfer Bobby Jones. The first day of golf at the Pasatiempo course was 09/08/1929, with a mixed foursome composed of Marion Hollins, Bobby Jones (), Glenna Collett (U.S. Womens Amateur Champion) and Cyril Tolley (British Amateur Champion).
