Charles Maud designed this very early golf course in California, opened in 1897. The Pacific Improvement Company hoped to turn the area around its Del Monte Hotel (1880) into a playground for the affluent, encouraging it to develop beaches, bridle trails, a bowling alley and casino. By 1897, enthusiasm for golf had spread to the West Coast and the Hotel Del Monte sought to be first with a new recreational attraction. In 2011, it was the oldest golf course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River.
