The San Francisco Builders Exchange once occupied this two-story building and created large underground storage areas to accommodate building materials.

The California Historical Society (CHS) bought this property in 10/1993 and set about retrofitting it to serve as its headquarters. The building was close to the Yerba Buena Gardens cultural district. CHS spent money to seismically upgrade the structure and increase the capacity of its storage areas and to make them climate-controlled for the storage of archival materials.
