The Fleischhacker Pool, named for the banker and San Francisco deal-maker Herbert Fleischhacker (1872-1957), opened in 04/1925 with a Mediterranean Revival bathhouse 450 feet long that surveyed the Pacific Ocean on the west and a mammoth 1,000 foot by 150 foot saltwater pool on the east. The pool, one of the largest of its time, could serve 10,000 bathers. Separate wings housed changing rooms and other service areas for men, women and children. A restaurant occupied the second floor of the poolhouse, positioned to provide a shaded spot to watch pool activities.
