Building History

The California State Legislature appropriated money for an asylum for the mentally ill at Agnews, CA, in 1885. The new $750,000 facility first accepted patients in 1888 and was completed fully in 1889. At its peak, the hospital served 900. Its front facade measured 750 feet across. A central tower was flanked by two wings, one containing a men's ward, the other for women.

Demolition

The San Francisco Earthquake of 04/18/1906 destroyed the unreinforced masonry structure of the Agnews Facility, killing 112 and injuring approximately 70.
