This second Hotel Del Monte replaced the first, erected by railroad titan Charles Crocker (1822-1888) and the Pacific Improvement Company, that burned on 06/01/1887. The first two hotels were constructed of wood-frames, and like many hotels of the 19th century, burned down. The second Hotel Del Monte mirrored the style and scale of the first. In 1906, the Del Monte Hotel #2 suffered some damage from the San Francisco Earthquake of 04/18/1906; two people, a Mr. and Mrs. Rouser, newlyweds from Benson, AZ, were killed when a chimney in their room collapsed.
