Movie and television stars Will Smith (b. 1968) and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith (b. 1971) erected this sprawling 25,000-square foot house for themselves and their 3 children. The Smiths first encountered the work of the Santa Fe-based architect Stephen Samuelson when Will Smith worked with Gene Hackman on the movie, "Enemy of the State" (1998). Smith visited Hackman's Santa Fe residence, designed by Samuelson, and liked its Pueblo Revival aesthetic. He coordinated with Samuelson and interior designers Waldo Fernandez and Judith Lance to create an eclectic synthesis of Persian, Moroccan, African, Asian and Spanish and Native American Southwestern architectural influences. Construction on the estate, set in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, began in 2003, with careful efforts at restoring the site to its original topography and vegetation.
