Engllish-born architects Ernest and Almeric Coxhead, who migrated to Los Angeles by 1886, received the commission for the first building accommodating the Church of the Epiphany congregation.
Founded in 1886, the Church of the Epiphany was the oldest Episcopalian congregation in Los Angeles, CA. The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles was formed in 1895, and this was the first site that the new Bishop Johnson gave a sermon in his new position. Johnson's son, Reginald (1882-1952), would become an important architect in Southern CA, taking on several commissions for the Episcopal Church.
An expansion program initiated about 1913 resulted in the construction of a new 68 x 50 addition housing a 250-seat sanctuary, sacristy and choir room. This previous church was used henceforth as a parish house.
